Colorectal Cancer: A Growing Global Threat — Morocco Is No Exception

Colorectal cancer has become the third most common cancer among both men and women. In Morocco, there are over 5,300 new cases every year and nearly 3,000 deaths, making this disease a significant public health burden. Yet behind these alarming numbers lies a message of hope: early screening.

The awareness campaign led by the Dar Zhor Association highlights the crucial role of screening in the fight against colorectal cancer. Early diagnosis—especially at an in situ or stage 1 level—can increase survival rates by up to 90%.

“Colorectal cancer is often insidious, rarely showing symptoms before an advanced stage. It is therefore imperative, especially for people over 50, to undergo regular screening tests. With early diagnosis, we can treat this cancer in 90% of cases, avoiding heavier and more invasive treatments,” emphasizes Krisni, Patient Expert and spokesperson at Dar Zhor Association.

To strengthen this campaign, Dar Zhor has built strong partnerships with healthcare professionals across Morocco—from oncologists to pharmacists, gastroenterologists to general practitioners. Together, they are working to educate and inform the public about the vital importance of screening.
